ILLUMINATE Utah’s Light Art and Creative Technology Festival


The Utah Arts Alliance announces the third annual ILLUMINATE SALT LAKE Festival November 8th & 9th at The Gateway Center. This event invites the community to explore our city in entirely new ways and to see it in a whole new light, by illuminating our culture and community through art and technology.

The ILLUMINATE SALT LAKE Festival is a free two-day community art event and a celebration of innovation and imagination for the community, art lovers, and families. The festival features installations by more than 30 artists, live music and performances, kids activities, a kids short film fest, interactive light art demonstrations, virtual reality arts displays, food trucks, local brews & spirits and much more!

Festival located at The Gateway. Programming partners include Utah Film Center, Spy Hop, Utah Division of Arts and Museums, Salt Lake City Arts Council, Discovery Gateway, Utah Museum of Contemporary Art (UMOCA) and Clark Planetarium. Over 50 artists and performers are involved in producing the festival.

Artists working with technology and using light as their medium will use the city as their canvas and create projection mapped artwork, light art displays and exhibits for the community to enjoy and experience a first of its kind experience.

The festival will also launch the new ILLUMINATE AR Augmented Reality app that will allow users to use their smartphones to have an enhanced experience with the artwork in augmented reality and discover virtual artworks that are only viewable through the app. In what is an historic technological milestone for Salt Lake City ILLUMINATE will be placing the first virtual public art pieces around Downtown SLC, 15 in total, plus an Augmented Reality experience with the over 30 featured art installations that will be displayed at the festival. The ILLUMINATE AR app also provides a gamified festival experience were users can find holographic robots hidden around the City, can unlock other games and check out the leaderboards of participants that have registered the most experiences at the festival. Participates that have registered all AR experiences at the festival will receive prizes.

Kids activities include the Kids Light Lab at Discovery Gateway, special educational demonstrations at Clark Planetarium, and Utah Film Center will present a kids shorts film festival.

On Saturday night as the festival winds down there is a special ticketed event called the AFTER GLO PARTY for those 21 and older. The AFTER GLO PARTY will be held at dreamscapes at the Gateway and will feature top DJs and performers as well as projection mapped displays, light art installations and more.
